Obituary for Dorothy A. Harper (Smiley)

Dorothy A. Smiley Harper, 91, of Center Township, was called home on Tuesday evening, July 16, 2013.

Born May 5, 1922, in Burgettstown, she was a daughter of the late Leman and Frances (Davis) Smiley. She was married to the late Howard W. Harper who preceded her in death in 1998. She was also preceded by a son, William J. Harper, in 2011, and two brothers, Paul and Reamon Smiley. A person of strong faith and a longstanding member of North Branch Presbyterian Church, Center Township, Dorothy had also belonged to the church’s former women’s circle. She treated homemaking as a profession which was exemplified in her homemaking skills. Baking was her specialty and Dorothy was known for her chicken pot pies and apple pies.

She will be sadly missed by her family whom she dearly loved including her daughters, Betty Jane Jackson and her husband, Donald, of Alliance, Ohio and Alladean George and her husband, Donald, of Potter Township; a daughter-in-law, Kay (the late William J.) Harper, of Center Township; eight grandchildren, Ed (Charady) Jackson in North Carolina, Donna Rea Jackson in Ohio, Jeffrey (Shea) George of New Brighton, Tim (Brea) George in South Carolina, Matthew (Erica) George of Brighton Township, Jason (Kim) Harper of Center Township, Chad Harper of Doylestown, and Chris Harper of Hopewell Township and his fiancée, Angelia Richter; eleven great-grandchildren and a sister, Betty Alexander in Coatsville.

Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca (724 728-4000). Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 20th, at 10 a.m. at North Branch Presbyterian Church, 139 North Branch Road, Monaca. Her pastor, Rev. Andy Beery, will officiate. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to North Branch Presbyterian Church, 139 North Branch Road, Monaca, PA 15061, or Good Samaritan Hospice of Beaver County, 1000 Dutch Ridge Road, Beaver, PA 15009.
