Obituary for Francis Bruce

Francis Bruce, 85, of Center Township, passed away Tuesday evening, January 28, 2014, at Heritage Valley Sewickley.

Born December 11, 1928, in McDonald, he was a son of the late William T. and Mary Ann (McFarland) Bruce. Fran proudly served his country in the US Army with the military police in Korea during World War II. He was a retiree of LTV Steel, Aliquippa, where he was employed as a blast furnace stove man for 33 years. A resident of Center Township his entire adult life, Fran was a member of VanKirk Lutheran Church and a life member of Center VFD #3. He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing in his younger years, fixing things and gardening. Family was first and foremost in his life along with a love of life itself and nature.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Leola ‘Punk’ (Winkle) with whom he was united in marriage on November 6, 1954; four children, Michael Bruce of Center Township, Terry Zdrale and her husband, Tim, of Denver, Colo., Martin Bruce of Center Township and Doreen Martin and her husband, Steve, of Parkersburg, W Va.; five grandchildren, Leah Walter, Michael Bruce, Matthew Martin, Crystal Ulbright and Daniel Martin; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Patrick (Carol) Bruce of Wampum and James Bruce of Cambridge Springs;four sisters, Jean (Paul) Reynolds of Center Township, Marilyn (William) Herman of Beaver, Joan Iorfido of Ambridge and Kay Severs, Freedom and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents Fran was preceded in death by a grandson, Bill Suskie; three brothers, Marshall Sr., William A. and Joseph M. Bruce and two sisters, Margaret Bable and Joyce Brown.

Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca, where funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with his pastor, Rev. A. Patrice Weirick, officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the Beaver County Special Unit at 11:45 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family has suggested memorial contributions may be made, if desired, to VanKirk Lutheran Church, 106 Van Kirk Road, Monaca, PA 15061, or Center VFD #3, 110 Van Kirk Road, Monaca, PA 15061.
